In-House Legal technology: an overview

In-House Legal technology: an overview.

The breadth and variety of technologies available to in-house legal departments has greatly expanded in the past 10 years.

In the mid-90s, most legal department had few options:

- Use technologies made available to them “as is” by Corporate IT, many of which did not quite fit the requirements of the Legal team

- Use technologies developed for Law firms or private practices, which were also not always fit for purpose

- Build their own systems and solutions, often Lotus Notes or Access databases which had obvious limitations and issues.

Fast forward 15 years and the choice is mind-boggling. There are Software, Applications and Solutions for all shapes and shades of Legal departments and a whole ecosystem, an industry of vendors and suppliers available to supporting the requirements of In-House Legal functions.

Lex Connect has listed and categorised most of them and we thought we should share our views and findings. We have classified key disciplines or “specialties” as we call them.
